Why Data Scientist is the Sexiest Job of the 21st Century?
By Afia Ahmad
Data science is all about using automated methods to analyze massive amounts of data and to extract knowledge from them. Essentially, data science is about using the large amount of data organizations collect to gain new insights, identify trends and find ways to streamline business practices, accordingly. As the customer base keeps expanding with every passing minute, the businesses expand as well, resulting in massive amounts of a raw data which is required to take efficient decisions and action.
Rising demand for Data scientists:
The big data movement has become mainstream and with it the demand for data scientist has risen significantly, in the past years. Businesses are increasingly looking for ways to use the massive amounts of data they are collecting and storing to gain new insights. As the data keeps on piling up, businesses are hiring more and more data scientists to analyze the data and provide fruitful insights about the trends and interests of the customers. This has made data science an in-demand job in the current market.
Wide range of choice of field to work in:
There is not a single field where data is not required; from finance to e-commerce, data has made its way into multiple levels of various fields. The common feature between the data from all these fields is that the initial collected data is always complex and filled with mistakes. To be able to clean this data and to use it for the greater good of the organization, a data scientist is required. Data science can be applied to very diverse fields irrespective of what kind of business it is. Various industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, education, public administrations, and economic development have come to know the significance of Data science and are hiring more and more data scientists so as to help them make better (and better-informed) decisions by analyzing the data.
Interesting Data Mining fields:
21st century and social networks go hand in hand. Facebook, twitter, YouTube etc are on the peak of their business span and will keep on expanding as long as data science is there to earn them a huge amount of money through social network analysis. Mostly every social networking site earns money through advertisements, personalized advertisements to be accurate. They earn significantly due to their superior ability to target ads due to the extremely rich data that they have for each user. The credit for this goes to their data scientists who turn that rich data into real business value as the best ad-personalization product available.
Apart from social networking sites other data-driven companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Walmart, and eBay have added to their earnings by the use of data science.
Better Job Market:
Although the demand for data scientists keeps on rising, there is a shortage of data scientists in the market. This would mean that if you are a data scientist, you won't have to struggle to find a job in a good company. As the data is piling up by the minute, mostly every company is desperate to hire a quality data scientist to analyze their data. This gives you an opportunity to even negotiate your perk package according to your lifestyle, which almost every other job title lacks. This rising demand for data science in companies has increased the salaries and other perks for a data scientist and has made Data science one of the most sought after jobs of the 21st century.
The main attractive trait of this job is that it's fun. Data scientists are inventors by way of making new discoveries and storytellers by way of presenting their discoveries. They can spend hours analyzing complicated data and find it intellectually satisfying. Top institutions such as Manipal Prolearn offer extensive training in Data science through big data analytics courses or big data Hadoop training courses. If you want to have the sexiest job of the 21st century and probably the sexiest job for many more centuries to come, this would be the perfect time.
